Shanice Collins Photography
Background
I have created my own print media company called Shanice Collins Photography, based in Birmingham but working nationwide. In order to get the most out of my self promotion a website will be the best option as it will allow me to display my work as my portfolio grows and show that range of print work that i can do.
Statement of Intent
My website will be simple and clear to use, promoting only my work and what my company can offer to the client. The theme that i have chosen to use will be used throughout the site and will be based around images of my work as visual examples of what i can do and how i can make the clients product look.
Website Progress
The purpose of the sight is to self promote and increase sales as well as to get the name of the company and its reputation into a positive place amongst my target market. Once the site and my work starts to become more popular I will then be able to start selling images that i have taken free lance and making a profit.
Design Methodology
I will create the site on Wordpress as this is a popular and very well known free site, used by many start up companies. The colour scheme for the site will be simple only consisting of black, and white for the background and text, and the colour being displayed in the images that will be presented on the site. Once the site has more hits and is more popular I will also be able to negotiate advertising. All of the page buttons will be in a central position and will stay there throughout the site for ease and continuity value.
Site Content
The main content of the sight will be my photography work, however there will be a whole page dedicated to my Press release work and another for my advertising work, both of which my company will also offer to clients. However these departments are smaller and still growing and therefore these pages will have less content than the main photography page.

Layout No.3
This is the third layout design which i created. I liked the idea of trying to move the page buttons to the more traditional place of the header of the page as this is more common in websites that i looked as but i made them stand out more by being in a different colour.
The main focal point of this layout is the self created logo that i will put underneath the buttons, which will include my name. To further push the idea that this is my website to the reader i will then add images from my previous projects at the bottom of the main page. These will demonstrate my range and what i can do.
The colour scheme that i have decided to go for is more towards the popular black and white that i have seen but by adding the lighter grey this makes the colour scheme softer and not so harsh on the eye. The white text also adds to this and the images will stand out more one they are in the boxes laid out.

Layout No.2
This is the second layout that i have considered creating for my website. For this layout i have looked at possibly putting 4 images from different projects that i have done across the top of the main page and then placing the page buttons underneath these images. At the bottom of the page i can then write a small into to the website, what i do and wish the reader a nice experience whilst on the site. This message might make the site more personal to me and therefore more inviting for the reader.
The colour scheme that i have chosen is very bright and eye catching. This is something that i decided would make my sight stand out from others that i have looked at which use more darker colours and are more impersonal to the creator.

Website Layout Designs
Layout No.1
This is the first layout that i have created for my website. I decided to make 60% of the home page a slideshow of images that will also appear on my portfolio page. I have used a black and white colour scheme as this was something that i noticed is very popular with photography websites and also is very eye catching as this is unusual for a promotional website.
The main pages are then central as this makes them easily visible to the reader and they will stay in this position throughout the website, and the other features of each page being placed around the buttons. This keep the site continuous and also simple to navigate.
At the bottom of the page i have embedded to videos, one of my short film that i created and one of the music video which i also created. These will be displayed here as i want to keep my portfolio very ugh focussed on my photography, adverts and page layouts, all of which are print media.
The design of this page is simple and this is how i want the rest of the site to also be as adding too many links and too many colours and images can take away from the work that i am trying to promote.

Hierarchy Diagram
This is my hierarchy diagram for the website that i will be creating. I have decided to create a whole page for social networks with direct links to these and my name of the sites also.
I have decided to keep the flow of the site very simple as making it more complicated and adding more sub pages coming off the main pages that i already have will be too confusing for such a simple self promotion site.
Rankin
http://rankin.co.uk/
Rankin is the whorl renowned fashion photographer, working with the biggest names in music, fashion and film, his work sells for thousands and will forever keep growing in worth.
Rankin needs little promotion in order to get booked for shoots, however he does have his own promotional website showcasing his work and those that he has worked with.
The home page of his website reflects his loud personality and his larger than life attitude. It is also made very clear as to whose website this is and what to expect once the reader enters.

The reader can then decide what side of Rankin and his career they want to see. He has his own site about him and his photography, Rankin film with his video work, Rankin LA which was previously based on his pop up gallery however this has returned to London and so this page is now dis- used and finally Hunger TV and magazine which he has personally started using his own images of current and rising music, model and film stars. He is expanding his empire and his website reflects this and has broken them down into their own smaller divisions, making it less complicated for readers to navigate what they are interested in and what they want to see.
As he is a photographer the theme of the site is very much based around his images. This theme is displaying a slideshow of images that he has taken in 80% of the page, with all other text being placed simply at the header of the page. He has then added his Tumblr and Twitter as their own page along with his previous exhibitions and also his store, where photos can be purchased directly.
I like this layout of this site and the use of pages to make the site more easy to navigate and simple to use. The choice to have the writing be so simple and the images the focal point is very effective. He does not have an about me page though and this can make the page to serious and not very welcoming, which is important as the reader wants to know who they are looking and what the person who is behind the camera as well as what was captured in front of it.
Analysis of Websites
Fashion Toast
http://www.fashiontoast.com/
Fashion toast is a self promotion website for Rumi Neely a fashion blogger, who has carved out her own career as a fashion contributed, presenter and designer.
She started her self promotion by creating a bloodspot and then moved onto her very own website, allowing her many followers to be up to date on her most recent events and new projects.

She started her self promotion by creating a bloodspot and then moved onto her very own website, allowing her many followers to be up to date on her most recent events and new projects.
The style of her website is still that of a blog, with there being only one main page with constant new image of her travels and adventures, and her writing only small pieces of information about what she is wearing and where she brought each item from. There are more images than journalistic writing pieces, very reminiscent of Tumblr and their image lead style. By her keeping her website in the same layout and format as her original blogspot page she is targeting the same audience and their style of blog that they are more familiar with. It also makes her page more young and fun, not very structured and very fitting with her own fashion style.
On her blog Rumi also posts vimeo videos of her styling people, and so promoting one of her jobs as a stylist. This makes her more real to the reader as you can see what she really does and so makes the site more personal to her. These videos also break up the flow of the constant images as they can become very boring as they have little description. These videos save her from writing, which it is made clear on here she does not like to do.
Another feature of her site is a header and a footer bar with other pages on that can be accessed as part of her site. The footer bar has access to her other social network promotion sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Formspring and Instagram. The placement of this information is very far away from what looks like the end of the page and so can be easily missed by readers. The pages that are placed in the header of the page are very easily visible yet are only leading to other fashion bloggers pages and so are not informing the reader on her anymore than the main page. She does however have access to an industry newsletter and so readers may access her site more often to read then and look at her content while on here.
